One of the most popular cartoon franchises on the Cartoon Network is Ben 10, a series revolving around the young Ben Tennyson and his mysterious device called the Omnitrix that allows him to transform into different aliens with their own special abilities. As Ben grew up, defeating his enemies and gaining new nemeses, the series needed to expand as well, and thus, Ben 10: Alien Force was borne. The latest video game based on this new series, Ben 10: Alien Force – Vilgax Attacks is scheduled to be released on multiple consoles soon. Recently, I had a chance to check out a section of the game to see what can be expected when the game is released in a few weeks. Vilgax Attacks is an original story based on the cartoon and is written by the show writers with elements taken from the current and past episodes to create a completely new adventure for players to explore. The plot revolves around Vilgax, Ben's greatest enemy, who has been plotting revenge on Ben and his allies by gathering groups of dangerous aliens together.

Gathering together the deadliest enemies that Ben ever faced, he sends his army out to conquer the home worlds of Ben's alien forms, taking over a planet at a time. Only Ben and his alien forms have a chance to thwart Vilgax's plans and save the universe from enslavement and destruction.

You'll need the abilities of your forms to solve puzzles. Clearly, the setting of the game is unique for the series, as it will take place across the galaxy on the homeworlds of Ben's forms. Ben, his cousin Gwen and Kevin, their former enemy, travel the stars in a spaceship that can be augmented and powered up over time to help the trio in their fight against enemy ships blocking them from their mission.

The demo that I was shown started shortly after Ben landed on a planet that was connected to Ghostfreak, an old form of Ben's that had gone rogue and been exiled from his Omnitrix. Ben has access to ten separate alien forms, some of which are from earlier seasons of the show. Players can select any one of these forms and stay in them as long as they'd like, allowing you to change between aliens to use specific abilities for various environmental puzzles. For example, it was possible to change into Echo Echo, a tiny white alien who could clone himself, letting Ben move across large chasms.

Ben could also fight as well, although his martial abilities aren't nearly as solid as some of the aliens he can become. Although you can stay in any alien form, using the abilities of the aliens costs you Omnitrix energy, measured by a green bar on the left hand side of the screen. While this energy will slowly refill over time, players can acquire more energy by defeating enemies. Each enemy you eliminate also provides you with experience points, measured by the yellow bar under the Omnitrix logo at the left side of the screen. Once you completely fill this bar, you unlock new abilities for your alien forms, providing them with stronger attacks, better defense or new skills.

All of these will be important as you try to defeat each level. Each world isn't simply a brawler where you're fighting your way through hordes of creatures; there are plenty of puzzles that you'll have to solve to progress through each stage. Apart from the cloning brainteaser that I mentioned earlier, there were other sequences that you'd have to figure out, as well as quick time events that you had to solve. One, in particular, involved sliding down a series of tunnels, hitting the right button sequence to clear the hazards placed in front of you.

Once you manage to clear all of the puzzles and get to the end of a stage, you'll face off against a boss. In particular, the demo level I played had me face off against Ghostfreak, Ben's former form. While I could use just about any form I wanted to defeat him, certain forms were much more effective than others, giving you a better chance at success.
