Franklin Ebookman Drivers
Quote: By Jethro: One of my favorite mobile devices is the eBookMan, so I was pretty bummed when Ectaco stated it was not compatible with Vista. Here is a workaround to get the software and drivers working with Vista. I originally installed the software under administrative rights and ran into some problems, so I reinstalled it open to all users.
During the install, Vista will automatically format and reinstall the eBookMan OS, so all data on your EBM should be saved. Download the eBookMan software(drivers are included), and set it to install under XP Compatibility. Right Click on ebookmaninstallpcenfull.exe Select Properties Compatibility Tab Run this program in XP Compatibility.
Keep administrator unchecked.I would also add, click on 'Show Settings For All Users' (also on the Compatibility tab) and click 'Run this program in XP compatibility' there, too. Vista will not recognize the drivers, so they must be installed through Windows Device Manager.
Be sure to have the eBookMan plugged into the USB port and turned on.When you turn on the eBookMan in its cradle, Vista is going to ask you if you want to install the drivers. I chose the 'ask me next time' option, so that it wouldn't do anything on its own and I could follow the instructions that follow. Don't know if that really makes a difference or not, but I wanted to follow the instructions as closely as possible. Right click on My Computer, Manage and then Device Manager.
Look for eBookMan, double-click it, and select the driver tab and 'Update Driver'. Point to C: Program files Franklin Electronic Publishers eBookMan Desktop Manager usbdriver. A warning will pop up, select 'install this driver anyway'. Once the drivers are installed, open eBookMan Desktop Manager and wizard through the setup.
For the latest OS, install from the Internet. All honor to Jethro! I was finally, finally able to reload the OS by using the Desktop Manager and accessing 'My Updates'. I downloaded the file, rather than just running it, so that I can keep a copy of it in case of future screwups, since the only way it seems you can download the OS is by having a connected eBookMan make an online handshake. I did find that there was no automatic 'Library' folder set up where it was supposed to be under C Program Files Franklin. eBookMan Desktop. Data, so I created one.
I haven't yet tried to download new books to the MMC I have in the 911. It did read the books I currently have on that old card. I also had to sychronize the contents of the eBookMan into the Contents folder on the computer. Hope this information helps someone.
Hi, I have a really big problem. I have got an EBM-911 which is faulty and loses the OS every time I replace battery.
Up to this time it was not a problem, because I could download the OS via Internet from Franklin. But Franklin removed the web site and the EBM Desktop software crashes and no OS is installed. I have the original install CD but at this point it also goes to the Franklin web-site for validation, and since the referred eBookman website was removed the Desktop Manager crashes also.
Could anybody make an MMC Backup (which includes the OS) from eBookman and make that available for me. I am terribly sad. Please help me Thanks in advance: Ivan Gortsew. My cd was lost, Franklin sent me a link to the desktop manager but it was not packed with the operating system. Waiting to hear back from Franklin on this. If anyone else can help, I would be greatful.
You can download the Desktop Manager from here: 2. Install the Desktop manager (connect the eBookman when asked) 3. Open (start) the Desktop Manager (open the book-like Desktop Manager icon from the right side of the tray), choose Your connection (e.g. USB) for the eBookMan.
Choose from the Desktop manager menu the 'web' item 5. Choose 'install OS from CD / internet' 6. Choose 'internet' and let the OS be installed, so follow the instructions. Franklin's web-site which contains the eBookman files has been down and promised by Franklin to be up again by the end of this week, so please wait till that with trying to download the OS (steps 3 to 6)!!!!!
By the way: You can download the User's Gudie from here: /B.
#1 aubreyf, 03:21 PMGreetings all! Thought it would be fun to get my old eBookMan working again to share with younger readers, but I am running into some difficulties. I found a Windows 7 compatible usb driver from Thesycon, but it seems that Franklin is no longer hosting the OS files necessary to make the device work.
I found some other threads on this site where people had mentioned downloading the os from Franklin back when they were still hosting it. Could someone who has the os please share it?
It should only take a minute to post the install file to a site like filedropper or megaupload. I am counting on you Thanks in advance. Download and Install eBookMan Desktop Manager You have a choice of downloading the eBookMan® Desktop Manager alone or with Intellisync® for eBookMan®. The eBookMan® Desktop Manager is the software that communicates between (syncs) your PC and eBookMan®. Intellisync® for eBookMan® enables you to synchronize data between the eBookMan® and Microsoft® Outlook®.
Please choose one of the following packages: the eBookMan® Desktop Manager only 1.6 MB, approximately 6 minutes with a 56K modem. EBookMan® Desktop Manager with Intellisync® bundle for use with Microsoft® Outlook® 6.0 MB, approximately 20 minutes with a 56K modem. The manuals are available under:.
EBM-900 eBookMan®. EBM-901 eBookMan®. EBM-911 eBookMan®.
EBM-911-502 eBookMan® Medical Edition. EBM-911-504 eBookMan® Developer's Edition A long time ago, I almost bought one, the EBM-911. Archiving the Desktop and Operating System Update 01/05/03: The method originally described here still required contact with Franklin's servers.
If you want to backup the Desktop and Operating System install files to CD or other media, so that you do not need access to Franklin's web site at a later date, it is fairly simple. First download the Desktop Manager from their site, picking the option to Save instead of Run. The Desktop is not keyed to the eBookman and you can archive the file you downloaded without any extra steps. We assume the Desktop Manager is installed for the following steps. If you have previously downloaded the OS & Apps and/or have things in your sync folder and you want to back up a clean copy you will need to create another sync folder. If you don't want to go thru the following hassle skip everything here and just archive your 'Contents' folder, which has the added benefit of also archiving your applications.
Warning: This step requires you erase your eBookman, so do a sync or an MMC backup before continuing! To erase your eBookman remove any MMC card and perform a hard reset by holding the power button and pushing the reset button on the back or remove the batteries for a few minutes.
Now create a new folder, assuming default install location for Desktop Manager, under C: Program Files Franklin Electronic Publishers eBookMan Desktop Manager. Now open the Desktop Manager, go to the 'File' menu, and select 'Change Sync Folder'. Select the new folder you just created. Now, with the eBookman plugged in and turned on, go to the 'Web' menu and select 'Download OS/Applications'. When it is done downloading click 'Yes' to sync.
This is the key as Franklin is again contacted and, as far as I can tell, the frnkebos.seb file is keyed to your eBookman. When it has finished syncing, you can now archive this sync folder's 'Contents' subfolder. If you want to test it, either copy everything in the 'Contents' folder to a new location or zip it (with the zip file placed in another location), hard reset, disconnect from the internet, and sync again.
To change your sync folder back and get your original information back, remember to go to the 'File' menu, to 'Change Sync Folder', and select the 'Data' folder (unless you have multiple eBookmans and have setup separate folders for them). Then you can sync again.

Or you can hard reset and restore from your MMC. In the past, the only solution has been to wait for the server to come back online (it probably won't!) per or contact Ectaco customer service per. That Yahoo Group 2006 post reads, in part. Re: eBookMan Re: ebookman from storage Have you tried emailing or calling Franklin? I had issues when I first set mine up about a year ago (their server was down, maybe that's what is happening now?) and the tech guy was very helpful.

There wasn't anything he could do until the server was fixed but it was reassuring to know that they were on the problem. I would think if they have decided not to support it that they would release it so whoever needed it could use it - and maybe even make it open source so that ebookman fans could have more options.
When I emailed them they never did return my email. If you can call them (not sure where you are) that would be the best way IMO. Good luck, Candace At 03:22 PM 4/17/2006, you wrote: So, unless franklin decides to put the OS back on their web site, I'm just going to have to put it back in storage? I read so many books on mine when it was in it's prime that it's rubber grips are worn off and the printing on it's front face is now scarcely visible, good times Do all my reading on an iPhone 4 and iPad now, but it sure would be fun to get the ebm running again. Thanks for your suggestions Nick, I have contacted Ectaco as well as Franklin and will let everyone know if their support is able to provide me with a solution. The desktop manager is providing Franklin's update server with my device's serial and model numbers as well as it's current firmware version via get data embedded in the update query url, so it's easy to see how (though not why) Franklin had each os tied to a particular device. Use the 'Download OS / Applications' item in the Web menu bar of the desktop manager to get your custom copy of the EBM OS.
Be sure to back it up in case the server goes down again. I am now trying to find a good source of EBM compatible books. It looks like BlackMask died years ago, Gutenberg stopped providing MobiPocket's native PRC files, Munsey's PRC files won't open on my EBM (it displays a 'please download a software update from mobipocket.com' error), and apparently the EBM doesn't understand utf-8 encoding because it displays Gutenberg's text files as gibberish.
As I recall, most of the cool EBM applications were hosted on GeoCities and they seem to have vanished from the net as well. At least the device is running great now. It won't load the OS. How did you get it to load the OS?
